Interesting to me is that the Messerschmidt micro car was an either/or engine.
To back up, you turned off the ignition and turned the key the other way to start it in a reversed rotation, giving it 3 rev. speeds.
When you backed up to where you wanted, turn the key and restart it in the Forward position and go about you merry little way...

almost any combination of 'blow, bang, suck, and squeeze' out of
the proper order could result in burps, wheezing, belches or barfs!

Should it Barf I wouldn't want to be there to clean things up :-)
