Re: [Chrysler300] Leno's Garage 300G video

For as underrated as we find the auto companies were announcing the horsepower of their cars to be in the muscle car era, they were apparently far worse in overrating the horsepower back in the '50s.

There are some online calculators here:

http://www.stealth316.com/2-calc-hp-et-mph.htm

that you can employ to extrapolate the actual horsepower of an engine using inputted car weight and 1/4 mile trap speeds. It's no wonder my 300C is a boat anchor compared to my '70 4-4-2. The 300C touts an advertised 375 HP, but the various "calculators" on this website come up with a true HP for this car of only something like 239 to 258. I used the nominal figures of 4300 lbs. car weight, and 90 MPH trap speed. I couldn't find any more accurate numbers to use.

It's amazing to think about the potential that Chrysler left unused in these early hemis when they built our 300s. Fortunately that potential did not escape the attention of those building the most triumphant dragsters of the day.

Many muscle car fans know that the power rating of many classic muscle car
engines were deliberately underrated. It was usually done for two reasons...
1) to lower insurance costs and 2) so the car could be in a more favorable
class in NHRA drag racing.
Here is a chart from a muscle car magazine from the 1980s. Written by Roger
Huntington, who wrote articles and road tests for many car mags, including
Motor Trend.

It was to keep insurance rates down. Do you really think the 426 HEMI only
had 425/6 HP?

maybe it was marketing hype, but I can't help but point out that the 392
Hemi in my 57, the 413 in my 61, and the 440 in my 70 Hurst all carry the
same 375HP rating.  Were they really all the same horsepower, or was mother
Mopar just hung up on that number?

Nicely done. Great publicity for our club. Maybe post a link on the website
and the club's facebook page ?

Â

A couple of minor factual discrepancies: No hemis in '59...not even in
Imperial. Also, hydramatic, not hydraglide, GM tranny.Â

Â

Just curious, Bob J...how long did it take to shoot that episode and was it
scripted, or were you guys just talking off the top of your heads ?

Â

Don, Rich,

Â

About a year and a half ago, I got a call from Jay Leno about a couple of
300G coupes he was looking at.  One of the cars was local to him, and he
ended up buying it.  He invited me to see it, so I went down last
December.  While I was there, he mentioned doing a video on the car, and
that he'd be in touch once he did some work on it.  So, last week, out of
the blue, he called me about coming down on Wednesday and doing the video,
so I flew down, went to his garage in Burbank and did the video with him. He
mentioned it would be about 2-3 weeks before it would be on YouTube, but,
this afternoon he called and said it was going up early tomorrow morning.Â
As respective presidents of the two great 300 clubs, and as a proud member
of both, I wanted to share the news with you.  Since I haven't seen the
finished product, I'm a bit nervous about the outcome, but everything seemed
to go well.

Â

300ly,

Â

Bob Jasinski
