agree , there is a severe data rate choke point somewhere . I am forced to DSL here , so I cant watch movies — and large images will take some seconds on home   internet,( I understand it is me —not size  of movie)  but my I phone data over cell is 5-10 x faster . 

So I know I have obsolete by todays standards internet service , yet Verizon nicks me for 90 $ anyway for poor service . Awaiting Elon Musk Starlink satellite system .    

I bought a MiFi block based on that , it is cheap if you have cell already it makes a wifi point from the cell network . Fast — if not crowded local cell tower use , but varies , especially with kids at home due to covid   

That said , I do agree images over  megabyte or two for what we do is not needed. Problems come with multiple images of high res 10 MB or more which all the new phones can make .  You usually can choose sending MB? 

And that said , if 2instead of 4 , it still takes a long time ( only factor of two better ) with a slow connection or slow hardware . 
Fios ( if lucky enough to have it) or starlink will fix this . Cable too , not as  fast and often flaky .

Are you sure there is not a problem on your end? Either with your internet service, your host, or your equipment? Sounds like very few of us have the extent of difficulty in downloading photos that you are experiencing.

I use an IPad, an IPhone, and a couple of different Microsoft desktops at two locations, and my downloading is always instantaneous. 

It doesn’t seem to make sense that all the trouble with large downloads should land in your lap.
