RE: {Chrysler 300} It never fails...



I was fairly upset but kept myself cool on the outside.

 

What fries my butt is that we were going to just paint the roof and the trunk lid and wet sand lightly the rest of the body and then polish everything out.  The factory white pin stripes are great.

 

The roof and trunk have natural places one can make the paint “break”. Since we must paint the door, I will lose the factory pin strip and even an excellent hand job on replacements stripes never will look like that machine roller tool that the factory used.

 

So, instead of a conservation of a 93K mile original paint job, I may have to do a full re-paint to get a consistent look over the entire car.

The door inside bottom is dame near perfect. The odds on finding a door that good inside on the bottom are long. That is why a new skin is a good solution. Probably less time than trying to pound out the existing skin.

 

My insurance guy told me to try and work with this insurance directly, so I do not have to eat my $1K deductible up front. If they give me grief, then I will have to go to my insurance to fight it out with them.

 

We shall see.

James, I should think Murray Park would source you a 64 Chrysler coupe door. Had a friend loose the entire quarter off his 58 Fleetwood after being hit from behind. Insurance covered a replacement quarter sourced from a wrecking yard. In that case owner successfully argued for a repaint of the whole car and got it (Hagerty). The door will be easy to find, fighting with the carrier a little harder. Let your insurance subrogate against theirs, they may be better at it than you fighting another guy’s carrier.

So,

 

I spent something like 36 months looking for a late 1950’s or early 1960’s Desoto or Chrysler to take over the daily driving duties from my 1947 Desoto. Everything I looked at in Northern California was junk one way or the other.

 

After coming across, quite by accident, the 1964 Chrysler 300K and finding it to have nearly perfect sheet metal with factory paint, I thought I had hit the jackpot. Almost no body work other then new paint would be needed.

 

Yesterday we parked the car for lunch at a café in Marin, my wife and I were sitting there eating and watched another diner walk out and get into his Range Rover. He then proceeded to back directly into my driver’s door caving it in. We saw the entire thing.

 

So much for my nearly pristine 1964 body sheet metal.

 

Now I must do a major door repair. I opened a claim with his insurance company. We shall see how that goes. Rebuilding a door correctly is a time-consuming job. I suspect that I will get into a pissing match with their adjuster.

 

I do not want a bondo job. I want perfect sheet metal. So, the fight will begin!
