Re: {Chrysler 300} Trans ID

contact Dennie’s Driveshafts . Denny is great   , did 5-6 for me . There is some admittedly crude info on tech site I wrote about this, did not want to lose the info while  working it out , for C to G I don’t know about 904 . CDE very close in size to FG , i think one would cover it but both are there .
The key part is a Dana flange that bolts on the 4 bolts on E brake drum , it holds  a nice big  spicer joint , the slide is moved into the drive shaft front (  between the U joints ) like big truck .  Effectively the same action as the Detroit joint .
This part exists as Winnebago built 413 440 motor homes on Chrysler / dodge chassis and had their own rear axle design issues . The TF both iron and 727 with E brake solved a lot of e brake issues in axle choices and I think large dodge trucks even had a larger one than ours .
So Chrysler/  dodge kept the E brake drum ( and 4 bolts) for Winnebago long after it was gone on cars . So Winnebago then needed normal driveshafts that work right , so this part was used , bolted to e brake drum
Be careful there are two 4 bolt pattern sizes, two sizes on this part  .

John,

I’m plan on having a slip joint adapter driveshaft made for my ’65 B’Cuda too, it’s the best way to go.  I did it to my 300G in 2017 and will not go back to a ball and trunnion. The driveshaft shop just made a new assembly for about $475, and I kept the original driveshaft for posterity.  I was going through ball and trunnion boots about every 1500 miles, and no more clunking.

Bob,

I stand corrected...   I was wrong.

There is a slip joint adapter on the drive shaft. I crawled under and looked.

Oh well, gotta be wrong once in a while...

Bob,

There's no slip joint adapter and it is a 904 with a cable shift.

Anything is possible...

Now I gotta go down the rabbit hole and figure it out. LOL

John,

I also have a ’65 Barracuda 273 that came from the factory with an automatic. They did not come with slip joints, they still had the early style bolt on flange trunnion style.  Someone must have changed out the trans on your Barracuda, or installed a slip joint adapter.

In 1964 the console shift cars used a different valve body from the pushbutton cars. I don't know if the 1965 cars had a difference between the column shift and console shift.

The 1965 cars went to the slip yoke except for the a-bodies.

James, maybe I’m missing something here? 1965 300’s did not come with push button trans. Cable shifted console and column shift only for all C-bodies. I believe it was 1966 they went to the hard linkage and did away with the cables.

Can anyone tell me if there is a way to ID if a 727 trans is a cable shift versus a console shift from the outside?

I have a trans that is an EARLY 1965 spare. Rail number  F2466112 1587547 which should mean Flint Wednesday December 1st 1965.

This in the MPB shows as an early 1965 383-413 with 4-BBL.

It is a flange not a yoke type. I understand they did a mod-year change from flange to yoke.

I would like to know if it was a console versus a push button without having to open it up.

Thanks, James
