Re: {Chrysler 300} Paint Codes

The 1 in RR1 denotes a single tone car. If it was a 2 it would be a two tone car with the paint codes for the roof and body preceding it. There are other codes for earlier cars that had more complex two tone patterns, such as 1957-59 Dodges.

I cannot speak to RR vs RR1. Acrylic lacquer was a GM thing. Chrysler used enamel.

I wouldn't paint a car today, any car, without using a modern polyurethane such as Glasurit. If you are stripping it, the former paint constitution does not matter in my opinion. What does matter is the quality and depth of prep and the paint system. I would use one brand of primer/base/top coat.

My only consideration would be whether I did single stage or two stage on a solid color. Metallics require two stage.

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Paint Codes

The 1964 300K is going to the body shop tomorrow for new paint. The build card shows a paint code of “RR!” while the tag shows a paint code of “RR”.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the paint codes of  “RR” and “RR1” ?

What does the “1” stand for if anything?

What I am trying to figure out is did they use Acrylic Lacquer or something else in 1964 so we know how to deal with the factory paint prep for the respray.

Thanks, James
