I am not an expert but hopefully will explain in easy terms ! When you turn your key to start the Brown wire sends Full voltage to the + side of the coil this increases voltage to your spark plugs, when it starts you release your key to the Run position this sends voltage to the ballast resistor which drops the voltage to about 9 volts to prevent your points from burning up! You Will then read voltage back on the brown wire But it goes no place! Just a back feed, it is all done by the key switch, some cars it was done by the starter solenoid. Hope this makes sense?!!!!

    On our ignition switches we have a heavy brown and blue wire. These have to do with the ballast resistor. The brown wire is for full right key START position and blue wire is for one click right key position, or RUN.

  When your key is in RUN position it seems that the blue wire would light up and brown wire would be dead, but as I was messing around with my test light, I found that there is still some juice flowing through the brown wire, just not as bright as the blue wire. Is that right or is my switch bad?
