Re: Electric Fans / Shrouds

One thing that may help is adding an overflow or expansion tank to the radiator. This keeps the radiator full at all times and slightly increases your fluid capacity plus most tracks require one if you plan on running the car down the track. If your trying to keep everything looking factory I've discovered a reproduction windshield washer bottle for an A body or a 66 (not 67) B body works well for an expansion tank. They mount right on the inner fender and look factory because they have the Chrysler logo and pentastar embossed on them.

Here's another thing that a friend of mine discovered who uses his car for towing a camper. He had an auxiliary tranny cooler mounted on the car for towing plus the tranny lines went thru the factory tranny cooler in the radiator too and he was having a problem with overheating when towing the camper. What he did was hook up the auxiliary cooler directly to the tranny and eliminated the lines to the radiator and he said he has no more overheating problems. I guess it makes sense since he no longer has the hot tranny fluid running thru the radiator. If your going to do this however I suggest you get a good HD tranny cooler.

I've got exactly the same issue here in Aus with my 426 63 Sport fury.

It ran hot so I got the 4 core radiator cleaned, then fitted a high flow
thermostat (which made a big difference). I also bolted in a new water pump
and made sure it was the cast impeller and not a pressed one.

On the highway its beautiful at 170/180 but as soon as i stop (and the airflow stops) it starts to run up past 200. Fan is a flex after market unit so I'll
swap it out with a steel factory item and fit a shroud. After that its a
thermo I guess if I cant get it under control.

Sounds like we all have similar issues..... does anyone know where I can get a shroud to suit? or do they have to be custom made? Being in Australia doesn't
help me I guess.

I have been having heating issues with my 472 in the Polara. It only
has the 22" rad. I tried a 7 blade direct drive flex fan, no good,
have an original 7 blade direct drive max cooling fan, no good, and
then what the car came with a VERY light, plastc Flex-a-lite direct
drive fan. As long as the car is moving the engine runs at 170-175
degrees. When I stop she'll go as high as 210 before I turn the car
off. Since installing water wetter and a 165 thermostat it has not
gone above 205, but I did not have a shroud. I installed a date
correct fan shroud last night and we'll see this weekend how it goes,
I'll keep everyone posted. Next step is a viscous fan if the current
set up doesn't keep it cool, after that, electric fan for sure, I
want to keep it looking as factory as possible. I know, I know, the
472 is not factory, but it keeps brand X enthusiasts guessing.
