I have no trouble finding a NA car that gives over 30 mpg.

I use what I think is a more refined criterion - $ per mile driven.

I have about $5000 into my M880, including purchase price and all the mods I've done. I've driven it 75,000 miles since I've owned it. That works out to about 7 cents per mile.

Go ahead and buy your new Dodge Ram pickup for $40,000.
You had better count on getting at least 600,000 miles out of it to beat me, and mine ain't dead yet.
Good Luck.

The best car I ever had with on this dimension was a 1985 Chevy Cadavalier. Paid $1500 for it (used), put another $200 into it over the years, got over 100,000 miles out of it.
That's 1.7 cents per mile.

As far as fuel mileage, why on EARTH would you tolerate the gutlessness of say, the 1900cc engine in a new VW for just 24 MPG, unless you happen to like the flower vase on the dash? I drive what I enjoy driving, do what I can to optimize the fuel mileage, and call that good enough.

FWIW, the M880 (now Cummins powered), gets an honest 21 MPG. not bad for 6000 lbs empty, and it's a BEAST.

$.017 worth
