RE: New guy in town

Hi Brian and welcome to the 62 – 65 Mopar site, the place where you’ll get good info from some good guys. Hope you’ll stay around a long time. I like AMC’s especially the AMX…ummmm! As to the rust prone or “trouble spots” on our early B body Mopars, Mo’s reply pretty well covered the body for ya. One reason for the sprayed on foam “could be” as simple as the wiper arm pivot seals dried out and leaked to the inside. Otherwise the rusting of the inner and outer cowl area on our cars can be, to some degree, a common thing. As a worst-case scenario, have a look at this page… http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/over62.html.
Still another place to inspect for rusting and most importantly are the front frame rails from where they attach to the trans cross member and forward. Also, check the area where the front shock towers are welded to the top of the frame rails. It’s difficult to see with the upper control arm and wheel in the way but you’ll find a “cavity” there, which can fill with road dirt/debris even though there are drain openings at the corners. But with a flashlight and some effort you should be able to determine if these are clogged or not. A tell-tale sign I picked up on is if you find the U shaped channel that runs around the outer lip of the upper control arm is packed full of road dirt/debris, then more than likely so will be this “cavity”. As a matter of interest, the L side (cavity) on my car was fine...but the R side was packed solid and rusted through. So hopefully you’re not too squeamish on rust so this won’t scare you off and the car you’re looking at will be solid. If not don’t despair, all is repairable. It’s what keeps or puts our obscure Mopars on the road for all to admire!

> Hi everyone. I just signed up wanted to say hello and also get a little info. I don't currently own a Mopar, but have in the past and currently own a few AMCs. I'm looking at picking up a 64 Polara 4 door in a trade deal that would basically get me the car for almost free. I haven't seen the car in person yet, but it appears to be in pretty good shape overall going by the pictures I've received. Replacing the original Poly 318 is a later model 318 that apparently isn't running great right now. I'm hoping it would be an easy fix, but if not, I have an even later model rebuilt 318 sitting in the garage I could install (late 80s roller cam motor). As much as I'd love a 2 door, I don't mind the looks of the four door models (without the post it kind of looks like a long 2 door) and would like to turn this car into a family cruiser.

I'm thinking that the cowl might be rusty and was wondering if this is common, unusual, etc. I don't know 62 to 65 Mopars that well, so I don't know where the "trouble spots" might be. Are there any particular places on these cars to look for rusty?
