Re: Mopar master cylinders - preference?

This is a subject that has been debated for some time , with "experts" and car magazines on both sides. Pro's and con's to Dot 3-4 and silicone. I am a silicone fan , both for cars and implants 8-) But I do realize there can be problems in certain circumstances. Many due to user un-knowing error. I use it- never a problem and appreciate the benefits for the past 7 years And will use it on my current project- Big disc front and big rear drums............MO

Years ago I used silicone brake fliud in my street rod ('23 t-bucket with 340, 727) drum rear and discs up front. I had a bad experience with it. I started out with dot 3 fliud then I changed to silicone brake fliud because it wouldn't eat paint. I drove it a short distance, less than 25 mi., and the front calipers started dragging severely. By the time I got it back home I could roll up to a stop sign and stop without applying the brakes! It seems that the silicone fliud expands as it gets warmer. The front pads gently "float" on the rotors but it developed enough heat to expand the fluid and the calipers and push the pads out against the rotors. I drained the system and went back to dot 3 and never had anymore trouble. About a month or two later an article came out in one of the street rod mags and it warned of the same thing about silicone. A brake componet manufacturer mentioned in the article said that silicone brake fluid did not belong in automotive brake systems. (It is sometimes used in commerical applications such as fork lifts.) Now having said that, that was several years ago so maybe they have changed or improved the silicone fluid to avoid this problem. Anyone else ever have that problem? Bill

I was just going back thru some old posts I had saved and
thought I would
pass along some info that makes sense: Dot 5 is not recommended
for cars
that hace anti- lock brakeing system , as the rapid movement of
the brake
fluid causes foaming in it. Just a FYI...................MO
