Re: off topic 340 engine

Pretty close on all the info. Up through 70 the carburetor was a Carter AVS, 71 and up Thermoquad. Horsepower was rated at 275 up through 72 when the rating changed - 240 then - but definitely underrated. It was probably closer to 325! Forged crank until 72 or 73 when a cast crank was used. A good running 340 can fetch $2500-$3000 to the right person. In a lightweight early A with a 340, they will scream!

PS - I have 2 340s of which one is going in my 65 Dart GT convertible

Okay, here's what I know. The 340 came out in 68 and was in production until 73. It was replaced by the 360 in 74. The 340 was only a high performance engine. You could only get a 4 BBL Thermoquad on the 340, no 2 BBL option on it ever. I think HP was listed at 285 for the whole run, but it's been widely accepted that this figure was underrated. I'm not positive, but I believe the crank, and perhaps all the engine's internals) was forged for the whole production run.

If his truck does have a 340 in it, he's doing pretty good. Even if he wants to go back to stock, he can sell the 340 for some decent money. A-body fans especially love them as they make an A-body scream.

One last tidbit. Starting in 71, in high-performance B-bodies, the big block was standard and the 340 was an extra cost option. It was sid that the 340 B-bodies handled much better than their big block relatives. Kind of interesting.

I hope this helps.

A friend called me and said he had bought an A100 Dodge from the early
60's It was origionally a 273 V8 but now has a 340. He was asking me about
this engine. I know a little bit about some of them , but figgered someone
here would know a lot more. I think they are all a higher performance
engine. What years were they in production and what were the various
horsepower ratings . Basically how were they equipped to achieve their stock
horsepower? Thanks for any info........................MO
