I looked into this recently and what I found is that the earlier cars have the SO number stamped in the hidden areas. Here's what's interesting - the SO number will be on the fender tag but the VIN isn't on the fender tag. So from what I could tell, you could have a matching fender tag to chasis but there's no way to verify the VIN to be the original to that chasis. Of course, the later fender tags have the VIN on them to tie it all together.
I'm not any kind of expert - this is just the conclusion I came too. I'd be interested to learn more if others have better info.
