RE: 318 Poly refresh time - Cam and gear drive info, please

Thanks. Oh, I'm sure that I'll tap the extra HP on cruise nights. But on the long trips, I'll be running gentle. Just trying to get the best of both worlds.... :)

Ray,

I would say the 256/.435" (208@.050") Solid or 256/.440" (206@.050") Hyd.
Poly HP Cam profiles would be what you need want for both HP/Torque and mileage...but as I said in the previous e-mail (below) when people "feel"
the increased torque or throttle response then they often drive more spiritedly and then the mileage may be affected. It's like installing a four-barrel carb; the smaller primaries offer better mileage over the larger 2bbl. venturi/throttle blades but people make good use of the extra power on tap.

While I've never had a poly refreshed (or rebuilt), I have done work to LA's that has resulted in better mileage and performance. Nothing major, but did like the extra HP provided by what we referred to as a "performance/economy cam", or "RV" cam, depending on the source. Too many years ago to recall the cam manufacturers, or if one performed better than the others. Regardless, the of- the-shelf LA cams aren't going to help me now.

Are there no poly cams available geared towards HP increase while still bumping the mileage?

Ray,

It sounds like you value MPG and you have a winning combination right now; I would stick with what you have as a cam change to the 256F would definitely give you more HP & Torque but this would also encourage you to use it and perhaps lessen your mileage.
