Short story about radiator cores and fin count.

I had my original radiator for my 63 SF with a 383 re-cored from a 2-row to a 3-row.

It did not cool well, might not have been any better than the original core that I had replaced due more to age than anything else, the car had been parked for over 20 years.  I tried just about everything including a shroud without much luck.

I talked to an old guy in a radiator shop in Yuma that told me with a new core I should not overheat unless it is thermostat or timing related until he saw the radiator.  He made it clear that my NEW core would not cool in Arizona.

It had 3 rows but the fin count was much less, it did not have enough surface area.  The old guy took me though the shop showing me different radiators and core designs to make his point.

I gave up, bought a U.S. Radiator, 4-row in copper, my problems are over.  I only went copper for the looks, the aluminium radiators are also great.

So just because it is a new core it does not mean it is a good core, the fin count is critical.

Core Rows, if I remember our conversation he told me everyone uses GM cores that use the theory bigger is better (Not in this case.), so their cores have larger tubes hence less rows, less surface aera.  MoPar theory is smaller tubes more rows more surface area.  He used a 4 row core intended for a MoPar not a 3 row Government Motor core.

The place in Omaha that I took my radiator to, said the tanks would not alow 4 core install. Maybe there is a way they did not know about.  They could do 3 core, but it was near as expensive as a new one.  Paul, I don't think your two core would handle the city driving, even with a shroud....................MO

Rich will have to weigh in on this but I believe he had his original copper radiator changed to a three core and didn't really get any improvement.  However I don't think he had a shroud installed with that.  Seems like he saw an immediate improvement with his aluminium radiator even without the shroud which I think was installed later.

Received last night and real happy with the quality.  Back ordered from Classic Industries on Dec 21st during one of their 20% off sales.  So a little over a month to get the back-order.  They honor the discount at the time the order was placed, and don’t charge your card until it ships.  Plan to order the floor pan the same way, when the time comes.

Go to http://www.usradiator.com/ and watch the 12 minute factory tour video, to see especially the copper radiator process.  At about 11 minutes in they discuss the aluminum cores.  I went with US Radiator because of the formed tanks - stock appearance with less welded seams - and American made to boot.  Most def going to add some bling under the hood.  ; )
