This may not be technically correct, but I will give you an idea of how our speedo needle works.  There are two " cups", or "drums"   One fits inside the other with a small amount of clearance between them . They are not connected to each other.  One or both  of them are magnetized. They each spin on their own axle. One of them is connected to the speedo cable, the other is connected to the speedo needle.  As the speedo cable spins ,thereby making the cup spin with it, the magnet attracts the other "cup " to spin along with it.  As the speed of the spin increases, the needle moves  up the MPH scale.  There is a very fine coil spring that , I think, is supposed to stabilize the needle so it doesn't fluctuate, and to bring the needle back to the 0 mph. 
   So you can see why it is important that the speedo drive in the trans, the speedo cable , and the "drum" axels in the speedo head must be clean and lubed and free to move easily. 
 Rich, my guess is, our speedo's drums magnetism , or the fine coil spring is not right. I believe we both have eliminated problems with the speedo drive and the cable, and the "  cup axles".  I am going to look in "hemmings" magazine to see if there is a speedo repair for our ancient mechanical  ones.............................MO

I had to take the head apart as the needle fell off, that's when I saw the little felt pad where the head revolves. I assumed it was to hold oil as a line for the head. It can be a problem with the cable needing lube also. Mine works fine now.

David, on my 64 Dodge , right above where the speedo cable  ferrel screws on, there is a tiny hole . Right above that hole is a screw head that is in the way.  I had my speedo out , so I could get some oil into that tiny hole.  It helped free up the shaft so it would spin easily, but didn't entirely fix the needle fluctuation....................Thanks for your input...................MO

 Cosmetically , my speedo looks great, but the needle is erratic to varying degree and I am pretty sure it is not in the cable drive , or the cable.  I lubed the tiny hole where the cable fits on the head- helped a little but did not fix. And I also want to set the odometer to 0's.................................MO

.ing for someone in the Omaha area that can fix my 64 Dodge Speedometer head.  There used to be a place up there many years ago. Can't find them.  In the Car Council book, there was an ad from a guy at Grand Island , Ne. but phone call results in recording  the phone has been dis-connected.  No listing in the white pages for him.  I would rather not send it to someplace a long ways away..
