Elite Veteran Posts: 1115 Location: Wild Wonderful | I am restoring a 1958 Desoto Firedome. I never liked the hubcaps on it, so I have been contemplating on what to do with them. I do not want to go with wire wheels. So, to keep it somewhat original, I figured the logical thing to do is modify what I have. So, I took out a black magic marker and tried some changes. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | I've seen some pretty good stuff done with 1960 DeSoto wheelcovers as well. IMHO, below is the way the factory should have done the 60 covers! AS to the 58 mods, I like #09 above with the gold ring. Location: Parts Unknown | You and I share a dislike for the 58 DeSoto wheel cover design. The big, flat center is just plain ugly. 57 is a pretty decent looking cap, but I like year-correct stuff, so that is out for me. Why couldn't they have just done a great looking cover like the 57-58 Dodge flipper ??? I always liked wires, back when they were rare and an upmarket, expensive option. But since nearly every Forward Look convertible now wears them, I am moved to do something different and am considering how I might apply a set of 58 Adventurer caps to a set of 15" wheels to get a good look ? As these are pretty much unobtainium, and I am lucky to have grabbed a set while I could, this isn't a very practical suggestion to you, and I question whether I would run them for concerns of them "growing legs" if I left the car parked anywhere without armed guards.

I wish they had done gold accents on the 1960 Chrysler wheel covers as well to go with the emblems. I like the 1961 New Yorker ones on a 1960.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | I wasn't a fan of the '60 New Yorker caps either. I prefered the look of the '60 Imperial much more. They could look even better with some accents too....and they're 15" so that's even better. (60NY_0401Close.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 60NY_0401Close.jpg (188KB - 211 downloads)

I think the back stainless part is basically a 1957 De Soto wheel cover. You bolt on the 1956 Chrysler spinner and Presto-Change-o! You have the 1958 Adventurer wheel cover. Location: The Mile High City | Thanks, Nathan. Yes, of all the non-De Soto centers for those spinners, I think the Windsors match my car the best. It seems like there is a blue center for the New Yorkers?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7409 Location: northern germany | The new covers look great! I'd install chrome centercones, to cover the Windsor emblem and paint the plain ring, inside of the "ribbed" gold section, body color. This would also accentuate the spinners more.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | The red centers are for the '55 Windsors. The blue centers are for the '56 Windsors, and the New Yorkers looked like this one. And this is a picture of an Adventurer cap. Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | It's funny that New Yorker colors were swapped for these two years. Blue shields were used in '55 and red in '56-'57. I'm not sure if they used the '55 ribbed hubcap for the New Yorker spinners in '55, as all the '55 Windsor ones I have seen were smooth, but I think it looks pretty good with them. Location: The Mile High City | Yes, Sid - that plain ring struck me as "plain" too! However, from my past experience with painting wheel covers, my inclination was that the more I paint wheel covers, the less I like the end result. Thus, I was a bit cautious there. Maybe I'll revisit that in the future.
Nathan - thanks for the run-through of the center emblems! I thought there was a third variant for Chrysler. I heard at one point someone was remanufacturing the De Soto wheel centers, but a web search bore no fruit. I'd love to find a set of those!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | In '57, Chrysler made a separate emblem for Windsor, Saratoga, and the New Yorker. But they were used on the front of the hood only. The New Yorker hood version was slightly different, in that the black portion was replaced with a non-shiny gold color. No spinners were available for the '57-up Chryslers as far as I am aware. But Imperial used a similar hubcap emblem in '55-'56 & '58 and so did the 300D & 300G (Maybe others too).

Location: The Mile High City | Are all of those wheel emblems / hood emblems interchangable? That would have been pretty clever of the good ol' Chrysler Corp!
The rotation on the wheel covers in the images is interesting too. I patterned mine off the ones where the "bottom" spinner arm points straight down to the valve stem hole (like the 56 New Yorker). It appears that the 55 New Yorker and De Soto examples have the "top" spinner arm pointing straight up opposite the valve stem hole! Edited by Lancer Mike 2020-05-04 10:51 PM

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | Yep, they are all interchangeable and they made the same style and size all the way up to at least 1966.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9681 Location: So. Cal | Looks like I swapped the years on Windsor colors. I was wondering why they were opposite from the New Yorkers. Red is 1956, and blue is 1955 for both of them. (1955 Chrysler Owners Manual.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 1955 Chrysler Owners Manual.jpg (29KB - 215 downloads)
