Veteran Posts: 111 | What was the factory 2 bbl carb for a 57 Dodge suburban with the 325 poly v8? Was it a strohmberg or a Carter? Also, does anyone have a picture of what a correct one looks like. Any advantages of one over the other?

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9912 Location: Lower Mainland BC | 57chizler - 2021-11-22 11:55 AM It's a Stromberg WW. Agree. The three Stromberg 2 bbls that are listed for the 1957 Dodges are WW3-149, 3-159 and 3-160. In searching eBay for a Stromberg 3-149, it looks like the 3-159 and 3-160 were one barrels for 6 cylinder (flat head) engines. That leaves the 3-149 as the V8 version. (?) Differences will include jetting, linkages, choke design and where the fuel line enters the carb. From an old FL thread regarding a 1957 Dodge Sierra Station Wagon: "- 325/245 HP engine - Push button Torqueflite transmission - Stromberg two barrel #WW3-149 carburetor" REFERENCE: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=27478 Also: https://www.conceptcarz.com/s14782/dodge-coronet.aspx (lists the WW3-149 for the poly V8) This link has a "Comparison of Stromberg WW and Carter BBD": https://carbkitsource.com/tech/Stromberg/StrombergWW.html Edited by 56D500boy 2021-11-22 3:25 PM (57Dodge2bblCarbTypes.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 57Dodge2bblCarbTypes.jpg (124KB - 110 downloads)

Extreme Veteran Posts: 580 | From the FSM: Model WW 3-149, is used when the car is equipped with the Standard 3 Speed Transmission only. Model WW 3-150 is used when the car equipped with either the PowerFlite or the TorqueFlite transmissions. Page 193 of Factory Service Manual.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9912 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Good find. From that page, 193 of the 1957 Dodge Factory Service Manual regarding V8 carburetors: "(1) Model WW 3-149, is used when the car is equipped with the Standard 3 Speed Transmission only. (2) Model WW 3-150, is used when the car is equipped with either the PowerFlite or Torque-Flite Transmissions. (This carburetor varies only in the idle system, the fast idle cam positioning setting, the vacuum kick setting and the calibration of the choke thermostatic coil spring.)" I wonder why 3-150 is not listed in the parts book. (???) Actually, it is, just on the next page, with the notation: "NOTE: The CARBURETOR ASSEMBLIES Listed Below are NOT Currently used for SERVICE." Extreme Veteran Posts: 580 | I should also add that the throttle shafts can wear on those carburetor causing a vacuum leak, requiring a new, longer shaft bushing. I think Mikes Carb Parts has a link to a person who installs the bushings if you don't want to try it yourself. I used that person and was happy with the results. On my carb, I was having a hard time confirming a vacuum leak using propane because I had several leaks on the carb in different places and I wasn't sure the propane was being pulled in at a leak or down the throat. I ended blowing smoke into the vacuum advance port and found the throttle shaft , and the gaskets between the three pieces of the carb leaking. Sent the shaft to be re-bushed and on a flat surface with emery cloth taped to it, lightly sanded off the high spots of all the mating surfaces. Have a very nice vacuum reading after that.

Veteran Posts: 111 | Related to the carb is the glass “filter”. Ours has all kinds of varnish in it. I have the metal cage off that holds the glass bowl to the aluminum housing but I can’t get the glass bowl off. Any tips or tricks to get this off so I can clean out the residue?

NOS Ceramic Stone Carter Fuel filters and gaskets are out there if you start looking. Here is one example: https://www.ebay.com/itm/363599694232?mkevt=1&mkcid=1&mkrid=711-5320...

Veteran Posts: 111 | There’s supposed to be a stone in there? Mine was just the clear glass bowl. I thought the heavy sediment or whatever would have just sank.

Veteran Posts: 111 | Just got an NOS one for $65. I figure with what a new stone element would cost plus the price of a used one for the spring, it’d be better to just get a whole new assembly. Next question.... were the housings red from the factory? Ours has no evidence of red being on it but after 64 years old, it could have all flaked off.

This replacement just happens to be that color. These filters were used on other vehicles as well, including farm equipment. Reuse your existing top, glass and metal retainer, along with the gasket, stone and spring from the replacement filter assembly. Ron

Check the gasket to make sure that it is still pliable. The red ones were the "Racing" filters, good for 10 hp. Kidding. (Sorry). I had no idea that Carter even bothered to paint the aftermarket ones. Makes them a bit more visible and maybe that's what they wanted. Flash. Bling. ??? This what they were like from the factory:
