![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Parts Unknown | What is the paint code on the ID tag ? This is almost the exact car I found years ago that inspired my interest in this color. The one I found had a white top and aluminum Spring Special inserts.

Either way, it is not an OEM color. The metallic lavender, of which this "restoration" might not be an accurate match, WAS a Spring Special offering that is not shown in any factory paperwork I have seen. A member of this site has a 59 NY'er in this shade and the above mentioned car I found was painted this color. Unfortunately, when I went back to get the tags off that 58 Firesweep, the yard had been cleaned out and everything was gone. ![]() So, the search goes on in trying to get an actual paint code for this color as it appeared on 58 DeSotos.

Expert Posts: 1480 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Australia | the aussie forwardlooks were available in completely different colours to the american ones... email the seller through the ebay auction... i highly doubt that you will find what you are looking for... i doubt very much that the firesweeps would have been released here with metallic paint, i think its a complete fabrication on the owners behalf... would be interesting to know what the 'original' colour scheme was for that poor car... adriana

Doc, I wonder if the paint was Spring Special for '58, and widely available for '59. I think that is the case with some other S.S. colors. There is some '59 discusson here, with a couple of cars (slightly different shades??) in the color I believe you are looking for. They are scattered throughout the 3 pages. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=28006&... And, here is a dealer brochure for 1959, perhaps the color you're after is code S? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Parts Unknown | Danny ~ You are right on the money. The color was widely available in 59, even if not very popular. GM even used it. Back at Mopar, the problem is the codes got changed every year. I'd just like to know what the code was in 58. Some of the Spring Special colors show up on late-issue chip charts, but I have yet to see one with this color shown. If the color was not very popular in 1959, it is simply rare as hell on 58 cars. As mentioned above, I have only seen one in my entire life, and I have paid reasonably close attention to these since the mid-60's and foaming -at-the-mouth attention since 1978. I have my original chunk of decklid color sample right here on my desk and I am moved to suspect the 58 color was actually a deeper and redder tone than the similar 59 offering. This car above being sold looks deeper and darker in tone than the 59 color, but my "chunk" looks even more red in tone. This piece being from the underside of a decklid was never exposed to the sun and may indicate the survivor cars or repaints paled when weathered ? The mystery continues ...... ![]()
