Man, a finned car would certainly look great, parked at this house's curb. Yeah, so it's spendy, in a ritzy L.A. burb; but, it could be easily replicated, in any nice residential area (PICT0172.JPG) (PICT0173.JPG) (PICT0175.JPG) (PICT0176.JPG) (PICT0177.JPG) Attachments ---------------- PICT0172.JPG (111KB - 208 downloads) PICT0173.JPG (104KB - 216 downloads) PICT0175.JPG (62KB - 209 downloads) PICT0176.JPG (112KB - 190 downloads) PICT0177.JPG (109KB - 200 downloads)

Location: Parts Unknown | Neil, You would have shat yourself over the house "Harriet" lived in near one I remodeled about 20 years ago. Much like the one you posted, it had post and beam construction with wood, glass, and colorful fiberglass panels throughout. Bart and Harriet were airline employees after the war - never had kids - and had lots of disposable income. They NEVER remodeled, and the house remained furnished in EXPENSIVE original Googie stuff, right down to a signed, original Calder mobile hanging over a sheath lamp, whose radiated heat caused the mobile to spin. The only thing wrong with the entire scene was the 66 Ford LTD in the pipe pole carport, but when asked what they traded in to get the Ford, the correct answer was "a 1957 Chrysler New Yorker". I did not have the "nerve" to ask Harriet what would become of her place after she passed, as she had no children, but I went by there about 5 years ago and the place was flattened, replaced by another cookie- cutter "McMansion".

I enjoy looking at these types of houses, very cool!! I'd build a house like that but my GF would run away from me Agreed, we need a board for this kind of thing. Edited by 58dodgeregent 2013-01-08 10:45 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 496 | This is my place. It's an all original 1966 modern ranch just north of Los Angeles. We bought it from the original owner and it is now a registered Historic-Cultural Landmark with the City of Los Angeles. The furnishings range from the mid-50's to the late 60's. Restoring the house has been as fun and as challenging as any FL Mopar has been. Of course, I has to sell off a bunch of cars to get it, but I kept my two favorites and they are tucked away in the garage. Extreme Veteran Posts: 362 Location: North Carolina | I would absolutely vote for a Forward Look Lifestyle message board! My wife and I love almost anything Mid-Century. We even have a subscription to Atomic Ranch we often drool over. All of my furniture and lighting is from the 50's. Also radios, stereo, dinette set, kitchenware and clothes are all from the Forward Look era or slightly before. Oh yeah, even Christmas is retro. Location: Parts Unknown | Aaron, All you need to do is rip off that sedate hipped roof and go all crazy with a cantilevered, tilted plane roof and a whole lot of floor-to-ceiling glass. The corner lot and two-access driveway offers an incredible porte cochere opportunity, much like the patio awning in Neil's post. How are your carpentry skills ?

I would, but my net tech skills are like my mechanic skills - your average glazed donut is more qualified than I am for that kind of thing. As my boss often says: "Less talk! More work!"

Extreme Veteran Posts: 496 | Ranch style homes typically had 5 specific traits exemplified by architect Cliff May, the "father" of the "California Ranch" style. 1. Fitted to the site (low slung, good proportion of house to lot). 2. Blank facade to the public (no visible windows). 3. Built of natural materials (mine has "glacier rock" on the facade and the roof). 4. The patio is the key (in California, outdoor living was of prime importance). 5. Corredor: the original family room (this is a deep, covered porch that typically runs the entire width of the rear of the home. Typically connected to the house with floor to ceiling glass walls). Most of the ranch homes followed this formula. They are typically plain in front and wild in the back -- like a mullet. More pictures are attached. Expert 5K+ Posts: 7207 Location: Victoria, BC, on Vancouver Island, Canada | Nice House, Aaron, but I have a question - these old Southern California houses, I know they don't need much insulation to keep out the cold, but what about insulation to keep out the heat? Or do you just rely on the A/C to keep them cool inside? Edited by imopar380 2013-01-09 7:56 PM

Extreme Veteran Posts: 496 | There are a lot of great houses around. What is happening here is that younger people are moving into the questionable areas and restoring the houses... And bringing the neighborhoods back up again. It just takes time. Ian.. There is lot of heat transfer through the glass as well as the terrazzo floors. The rock facade also doesn't help much... Though having a white house with huge eaves helps a little in the summer. Even so, the a/c and heat are on almost year round. And it's an all electric house... So the heat pump is electric too! My power bill would make you spit out your coffee! There's a price to pay when you have old stuff... But it's so worth it!! Aaron

Extreme Veteran Posts: 362 Location: North Carolina | Awesome pics Aaron!!! My wife and I immerse in the culture from the 40's to the early 60's as much as we can. I am so glad to see others, who aren't necessarily Rockabilly guys (one of the best scenes to find like-minded peeps) into Mid-Century houses, cars, clothes, music, furniture and life in general. Though I wasn't born yet, I've loved it since Mom put on the first Elvis record and showed me & my brother swing dancing. Btw, between the rockabilly(1950's) and swing dance scenes (1930's-1950's) there's no shortage of folks to share a common taste. Though we are in the minority with the daily dress, even when not at a dance, lol. Extreme Veteran Posts: 362 Location: North Carolina | Great houses guys, you are blessed to own them. I sold my newer house and we're renting now, but I'll inherit a ranch house that was built in the mid-forties. Though it isn't a "Jetson" style house, we are playing around with ideas to make it more so, including changing the roof line somewhat. It won't be cheap but this is the last place we will live so we may as well make it like we want it.

Exner Expert 19,174 posts. Neil passed away 18 Sep 2015. You will be missed, Neil! Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | Brent, most people who can afford a 2MIL home can lay down more than the usual 20%, but, for this exercise, let's assume $400K-down and a reasonable 30-year 3% APR. Financing $1.6MIL would calculate to around $6,750.00 monthly mortgage payments, or around $81K/year. Taxes are normally calculated at 1.25% (on the $2MIL), or, about $25K/year. Homeowners insurance would be about $4K/year. Together, you get a nut of about $110K/year. Also, today, lenders are requiring that the loan:income ratio should be as high as 35%, so, to qualify for the $1.6MIL mortgage, a household's verifiable annual income would need to be about $315,000.00 . "For THIS house"?, I hear you ask. Location, location, location, as they say. BTW, nice homes are typically presented in the Sunday Real Estate color-Rotogravure section. Your similar house's value may vary. Edited by d500neil 2013-01-31 10:56 PM

Did a Google-Earth on it, and see that it is in no need of National Flood Insurance coverage, or, probably, earthquake coverage (because of the high loss deductible). Well built, One-story wood framed (low-) ranch-style residences are fairly earthquake- proof. The front and rear did have three stacks of double windows, however the bottom set needed to be boarded in since every time we would mow, the lose gravel from the roof would break them. We went through 9 windows in a year (two seasons of mowing). The rear gives you a good shot of our neighbors more interesting roof line. Location: Parts Unknown | d500neil - 2013-03-11 11:54 AM Location...how's that go again? =============================== It goes like this: The location needs to provide a benefit-to-detriment ratio relevant to the cost. Lets see: 90,000 vs. 1,500,000 or 50,000,000. At 1.5M, that place needs to provide 16.5 times the benefit ratio to the 90K "location" At 50M for the Palm Springs digs, that number jumps exponentially to 555.6 times ! Somehow, this old farm boy simpleton just can't see the cost-to-benefit ratio being more than a lot of Disneyland puffery. I don't understand how the common wage earner keeps his head above water, let alone can enjoy life ... or even think about signing on for a nice mid-century modern house to call "home". It's sad, really.
