Member Posts: 33 | Seasons Greetings To All, I am assembling a 1960 Sonoramic Fury for one of your forum members and need a little help from you Sonoramic gurus. I don't have any of the mounting brackets for the generator or power steering pump, have no idea what they look like and don't know if those items are Sonoramic specific or regular 361 parts . Any pictures of brackets on or off an engine would be appreciated . Also we have all of the long ram choke parts except the actual choke springs that go into the manifold wells (thermal bimetallic springs) . Does anyone know of a source for these ? Any and all help greatly appreciated. Pete

PICTURES PLEASE!!! | ||

Member Posts: 33 | Wizard, thanks for the kind welcome. 1960 Fury , I understand that I could probably used the springs themselves but I don't have the assembly to attach them to. As for pictures the owners son in law is active here so I'll leave it to him to post pictures. Besides I couldn't figure out how to post pictures on this site , I'm not the most computer literate person !

Member Posts: 33 | I will attempt to post a picture of the passenger side exhaust manifold, looks like it needs something very specific to get a generator bracket on there... It appears that the manifold has been machined at a specific angle to accept another part. The 361 manifolds that I have seen in the parts book have a mount cast into them to accept the gen bracket , this manifold does not.

Unlike the manifolds that I have seen in the 1960 parts book this one doesn't have the mount cast in to accept the gen bracket.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | If it doesnt have the bracket to mount a generator, then I would expect the manifold (at least) is of a 61 or later when they went to an alternator thats bracketed off the r/h head

Member Posts: 33 | Ok, finally figured out how to post a picture here. This is what we are working with and if I understand correctly we have a later exhaust manifold with the proper year cylinder heads. Which means there is no way to attach a gen bracket to either because there is no mount on the manifold and the head is not drilled to accept a bracket ?? Location: Parts Unknown | What you have there is a 1960 manifold (generator car) with the generator bracket extension cut off for what was typically an installation on a 1961 alternator car. A 1960 unit will have an extension sticking forward about 7" from where yours is cut off. A steel, double-ended pivot bracket (much like those used on 354-392 Hemis) then held the generator. No wonder you were scratching your head !!!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | Yes, or you will have to drill the head and fit an alternator Electrically a better option, but if your doing a 60 and you want orriginality, then a very rare and expencive exhaust manifold will be needed. Although Chuck might still have these http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=52798&... ram exhaust&highlightmode=2#M442370 And these didnt sell at the auction, you may be able to negociate a price tfor the lot and swap your modified minifold into it, and re sell as a 61 set (on the bottom of the add, someone says they think its a 60 setup) http://www.ebay.com/itm/271702512116?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&s... Good luck and be cool to see more pictures (now you have the knack)

Posts: 19146 Location: bishop, ca | AND.....unless you are running some sort of really HD electrical equipment on your ride....a properly overhauled generator will provide all of the electrons that your car will need to operate efficiently, day or nite. Of course, the above information reflects only my driving experiences since around 1981-ish, when I had my non-A/C car's generator be overhauled. Since then, the generator has worked just fine, in charging the electrical system. In fact, in 1986, installed an AC Delco battery (properly camouflaged)....and it lived happily for about 21 years, in the car.

Veteran Posts: 139 | I second Neil's comments about keeping the original generator.....the gennie in my 58 Coronet with 85,000 miles has never been apart or repaired in any way, and I daily drove the car back in the mid-late 70's when I was a teenager, with the 8-track playing constantly!

Member Posts: 20 Location: North Carolina | Pete, thanks for posting this and unravelling the puzzle. This is the son-in-law (Hugh) of the owner of the car. I agree with everyone that we should preserve the originality and we have that intention. I have sent a PM to Chuck in the link above. Does anyone know of any other sources? Also, we still have a mystery with the choke set up, so if anyone has pictures or diagrams of parts that are needed to complete the functionality of the system that would be very helpful. Hugh

Location: Parts Unknown | Hugh, Forum regular Joe in Colorado has a very original Sonoramic 60. Have you contacted him ? A more common avenue would be any properly restored 300F. Many more survive and the restoration resources are much stronger.

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | Yea, it's a fun one. All original. I need to go through the engine, I was running it pretty hard down the freeway in the summer and it generated a miss and smokes a bit now. By summer it will be up and going again. Fun to open all the windows and let the wind blow through.

Elite Veteran Posts: 836 Location: Layton, Utah | I bought it from a guy that collects cars, he bought 3 or 4 cars that were in a chicken coop since the early 70s. The sticker on the window of the wagon was last from 1975. Did a major cleaning and flushing of everything and she ran and shifted pretty good and cleaned up nice. Very clean dry car. Shows about 65K.
