Veteran Posts: 131 | Turns out, for some inexplicable reason, the guy thought I was just coming down to verify I wanted the engine, not to pick it up. Told me he couldn't pull it 'til mid-week, so I'll have to go back. I'm frustrated, because I borrowed a buddy's pickup & drove 1.5 hrs one way to get this motor. I won't be able to borrow it again, so now I have to get a ball for my hitch and rent a trailer when he says he's got it ready. Seriously, who thinks someone is going to drive that far just to say "Yeah, I want it"? Oh, well, at least I'm still going to have an engine soon... | ||

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8444 Location: Perth Australia | Being that the engine and trans are out of a 64, I believe your not going to have an E brake anymore 62 was the last of the trans mounted E brakes and (i havnt done this, its all been knowledge picked up off this site) and I dont believe you can swap out the extention housings from 1 trans to the other (I could be wrong there) Probably better for the guys that have messed more with this stuff to tell you, but its not going to be a drop in exactly | ||

Veteran Posts: 131 | Thanks for the info! I was planning on swapping out the rear axle at some point as well, so hopefully I can remedy the e-brake situation that way. Just need to figure out what the best axle option is when I get to it. | ||

Veteran Posts: 131 | Well, I'll be having the engine dropped off to the machine shop on Sat morning. Having a full stock rebuild done on it. Will have pics of the engine & trans then, and will post them when I get home. As I don't know much about identifying transmissions, from what I've gathered on the board (and from a couple of very helpful PMs from Rodger!) the '64 engine/crank will not bolt up to my original trans, is that correct? | ||

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Yes, the A727 (which is what the 1964 transmission is) will not bolt up to a pre-1962 engine. The starter on the A727 is also different, being the reduction gear starter. The ring gear on the 1960 Matador has a different tooth count than the 1962 and up A727 so the starters will not interchange. Also, the 1964 A727 has a park sprag which the 1960 Matador did not have. The A727 Torqueflites with a park sprag have an additional lever to control the park sprag. 1962 was the year the aluminum-case A727 was introduced and there were two versions. The 1962 Plymouth and Dodge Dart/Polara used a version with a spark sprag, no transmission-mounted e brake and used Bendix brakes. The A727 used by Chrysler. Imperial and Dodge Custom 880 used a version with no park sprag, had the trenamiaaion-mounted e brake and used Lockheed brakes. Chrysler, Imperial and Dodge 880 switched to Bendix brakes for 1963 and thus got the Plymoouth/Dart/Polara version. | ||

Veteran Posts: 131 | Thanks for the input guys! I was talking to the machine shop guy a bit too much to remember to get the pics I wanted to, but I got this one. Guy I bought the engine from said the trans is good, but I'm wondering if I should just go ahead and get it rebuilt while it's out. Right now, I'm trying to track down the thread that had the axle/perch widths listed by year, so I can determine what rear axle I need. Anyone know if the rear out of that '64 Ny'er would be close? From what I remember of the list, one option it showed would require moving the perches, the other would mean buying back-set rims (axle too long by an inch/side). The red arrow should be my Matador, the blue arrow (if I understand the chart correctly) would be the '64 New Yorker that I got my engine from, and the green arrows would be other options that might work. Veteran Posts: 131 | Guess I could update this thread - front end suspension rebuild kit has been installed, along with a '72 E-body rear axle w/2.76 sure-grip. New driveshaft installed as well, all last fall. Dropped the old tank (looks to be in good shape, but has old fuel in it), straps are in great shape. Got the engine running & timed last week, sounds great! Waiting to hear back on pre-bent fuel & brake lines from TheRightStuff, then I should be able to start assembling everything.
