Expert 5K+ Posts: 9167 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Too many trim code posts in the 56 Plymouth Paint Code thread that I started (but probably shouldn't have) so I am copying the trim code posts here to have a separate searchable info area. ![]() First of all Nathan (Powerflite) has a thread that he started after he acquired a 56 Plymouth "Finishes and Fabrics" dealer book (with charts and samples etc): http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70649&post... But he did say: "Finally, here are the fabrics shown in the book. I am a little disappointed that I haven't been able to find trim codes listed with the different fabrics yet, but hopefully that information is out there somewhere." So in the paint code thread frwl said: frwl - 2020-08-25 11:44 AM So, what we have about ’56 Plymouth Trim Codes: PLAZA AND SAVOY 825 = All Vinyl – Tan (Leatherette) – see a ’56 Plymouth Order Codes SAVOY 505 = Vinyl and Cloth – Blue BELVEDERE 508 = Vinyl and Cloth – Green 510 = Vinyl and Cloth – Rose and Black http://forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=70649&post... Notice, please: 1956 Dodge Trim Codes beginnings from code 526 for vinyl and cloth and from 826 from all vinyl upholstery… When the Plymouth trim code numbers are ending – ’56 Dodge trim codes are starting… It is significantly narrows the search Nathan: give a trim code numbers, please… To which Nathan replied: Powerflite - 2020-08-25 12:22 PM The book doesn't have the trim codes, unfortunately. Nor does the book for the '55 Plymouth. They are rather sparse on details. But my guess, based on the order they are shown in the book would be: Suburban: Deluxe---Gray Custom--Brown ----------Green ----------Black/Gray Sport Brown/Beige Plaza: Gray 499 Green 500 Blue 501 Savoy: Brown 502 Gray 503 Green 504 Blue 505 Belvedere Sedan & 2dr: Blue 506 Green 507 Brown 508 White/Black 509 Rose/Black 510 Belvedere 4dr hardtop: Blue 511 Green 512 Brown 513 White/Black 514 Rose/Black 515 Convertible: Blue 516 Green 517 Brown 518 White/Black 519 Rose/Black 520 Fury: Tan Leatherette 825? But as I say, this is a total guess that happens to match my cars. Nathan then added: Powerflite - 2020-08-29 6:39 PM I just verified today that '56 Savoy Gray upholstery is Trim Code 506. So my guess is way off. I'm not sure how they numbered them. This is Dave's parts car: '56 4dr Savoy, 6cyl, powerflite, no heater, no radio, power steering!, manual brakes. Only codes are M8=3, M9=1. This might help to nail down which option designates power steering. This car is very odd though. It is a 6cyl Savoy with body code 625, which matches properly, but it has paint code 681, canary yellow/white, which is supposed to only be available on the Belvedere. I guess they didn't follow those rules very strictly. The back seat definitely was covered in the original gray Savoy cloth though, not for a Belvedere. frwl then replied: frwl - 2020-08-31 7:40 AM Might it be so? PLAZA 501 = Green 502 = Blue 503 = Gray SAVOY 504 = Green 505 = Blue 506 = Gray 507 = Brown BELVEDERE 508 = Green 509 = Blue 510 = Gray (White/Black) 511 = Brown 512 = Rose/Black Maybe Nathan’s Belvedere originally was white/black and not a rose/black? To which Nathan replied Powerflite - 2020-08-31 9:02 AM Except that I see the rose vinyl on the seats. It isn't white. Hopefully future 56 Plymouth trim code posts can be made here? ![]() Edited by 56D500boy 2020-08-31 1:00 PM

Expert Posts: 1523 ![]() ![]() | . Body Code is 866 (8 painted over and similar to 3) = Belvedere 2 Door Hardtop What the paint code 699 on it? I’m not found it in the “56 paint and upholstery book” 669 and 6691 only… Might it be 6691 is 699? If so, this is an Eggshell White over Sea Spray Green and Sportone (correct me) And the Trim Code is 518 (8 is also painted over and similar to 3) = Green Vinyl and Green Fabric But the Green Belvedere Trim has code 508… as we discussed earlier… Might it be an optional all-vinyl Belvedere Convertible trim? Expert Posts: 1523 ![]() ![]() | . SP is a Special Order or a Special Equipment; probably export model Torqueflite is upgraded restoration option same as power steering and power brakes… The currently upholstery is wrong… Other thing is an interesting: what the paint code 699 is this? The ’56 Plymouth single colors occupy code from 601 to 657; and two tones from 661 to 683… SCHED 0705 = July 05, 1956 – very late model

The 1957 Plymouths weren't released until Oct. 25, 1956 so July 5th isn't that late. They probably built 56s into late August/early September. Chrycoman (Bill W.) will know (probably)

Member Posts: 40 ![]() Location: California | I have to agree with "frwl" that the special purchase ordered Torqueflite transmission for the 1956 Plymouth Belvedere that had a build date of July 05, 1956, was indeed a very late production model. Chrysler and its division car models for 1956 would continue its production to around mid-August of 1956, when then they would start shutting down its factories to re-tool and modernising its plants for the new 1957 car models. Production of its new 1957 car models would generally start slowly during the 1st week of September 1956 and would ramp-up at full production during the month of October 1956. This information on the 1956 Plymouth Belverdere that has a factory special purchase ordered Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission and is also shown on its body data tag "SP" codes is very interesting, for I have never seen a Plymouth model before with this transmission. I have heard thatsome of the highier priced models of Chrysler/Imperial, DeSoto, and Dodge (late production) car models were able to get the special purchase ordered Torqueflite transmissions. In fact, my father is is now around 85 years old, had originally purchased his first brand new 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport 2-door coupe hardtop from Walton Chrysler in Chicago Illinois, which was one of the largest Chrysler dealerships in the country. My father had just graduated college in 1956 and on July 1st of that year, my grandparents had taken my father into the Chrysler dealership to pickout a brand new 1956 Chrysler car. My father saw a 1956 Imperial that had a Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission, which he drove and liked a lot. But, instead my father saw a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport model on the floor that he like better, but it only had the Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission in the car. So, my father asked the salemen if he could order a brand new 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport with the same 3-speed automatic transmission that the Imperial car had. But, the saleman said,"No" and my father then said he would wait and come back at a later date to purchase a new 1957 Chrysler car model that would come out in only a few months (Oct). My father and grandparents started to walk out of the dealership, when the general sales manager started to run after them and he said that the saleman was not correct. The general sales manager then told my father that Chrysler had allowed any buyer that purchased one of its late production highier priced car models, that they could special purchase order its Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission, which my father had then ordered the car and it took 30 days for him to finally get it from the factory. My father still owns and loves this car, but he no longer drives it and has put it away into storage, which I hope that I will be able to own it one day. I also own a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport model, but my car has the common Powerflite 2-speed automatic transmission in it. Also, there is another person that I have found awhile ago that also has a 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport model and he claims that his car also has a special purchase ordered factory installed Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission in his car and that his car is a very late production model ? I have attached a magazine article link below that was written about his car. http://www.cruisenewsonline.com/1956ChryslerNewYorker/1956ChryslerNewYorkerFeature.html

What he said was: frwl - 2020-09-02 10:53 AM SP is a Special Order or a Special Equipment; probably export model Torqueflite is upgraded restoration option same as power steering and power brakes… Without the IBM card there is no way to know for sure exactly what transmission this 56 Plymouth left the factory with. ![]()

Member Posts: 40 ![]() Location: California | frwl also said the following ... "SP is a Special Order or a Special Equipment; probably export model Torqueflite is upgraded restoration option same as power steering and power brakes…" Also, power steering (351) and power brakes (365) was a regular sales option that was available for the 1956 Plymouth car models and it would NOT be listed on the factory's special purchase equipment orders, for both of them already have sales ordering codes. The special purchase equipment orders are only used when an option is not normally available for a particular car model and it would list the special equipment by its part number and/or a description of it, for there was no regular sales ordering codes available for that particular special equipment and car model. Misspelled Bumper into Buffer, and they ambiguously call them guards instead of wing guards, so they had to clarify with "outer". Wings is a later mopar term though. Most others called them ends or tips.

Member Posts: 40 ![]() Location: California | I was looking thru all my old 1950's newspapers that I have in my collection and I happened to find a couple of car dealership ads that were selling a 1956 Plymonth's top of the line Belvedere cars with a Torqueflite automatic transmission, which I have also downloaded. I will also try to find and download a photo of my father's 1956 Chrysler New Yorker Newport's very late production (July 1956 built) car model that he had originally special purchase ordered "brand new" from Walton Chrysler dealership in Chicago, which has a Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission and he still has this car. This thread is supposed to be about the interior trim options for 1956 Plymouths not random mythical 56 Plymouths with supposed Torqueflites in used car adverts written by 100% always truthful used car salesmen. Please post again when you find some actual 56 Plymouth trim code information. ![]()

Expert Posts: 1523 ![]() ![]() | . I think this is a blue, the Turquoise Blue 509. The key to understanding is a color of the dash panel and the color of the vinyl at the edges of the seats. In this case we can see dark blue color. The green 508 trim for comparison below: (1.JPG) (2.JPG) (3.JPG) (4.JPG) Attachments ---------------- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
