I took painstaking efforts to tune my WCFBs.
I can honestly say she idylls like a kitten.

I found that the floats were too high AND the seats were not seating which lets fuel literally FLOW into the venturis
New seats would only set you back about $20 total.

ALSO--your idyll screws should only be 1 to 1 1/2 turns open,,and as far as the idyll itself the FRONT carb should be doing all of it with the back carb just about shut.  
The big air bleed valves on the drivers side of the carbs should be totally closed off.

I followed the tuning instructions in the maint manual AND THEY WORKED

  The WCFBs that I have in operation do not have tags, but according to the 
  Carter maintenance sheet they are 2631S and 2632S for the 1957 Fury.  

  I cleaned them up and put new gaskets all around and then just fired them up. 
  My tail pipe has a bit too much soot to satisfy me, i.e. the carbs are 
  running rich.  Maybe that is the way they all run.

  I would like to know the experience of others on tailpipe soot.  Eight miles 
  to the gallon is the best I can do on very expensive premium gasoline.
