I'd check the slack in the timing chain by turning the motor over by hand and watching the rotor.  If that's ok, it's most likely the sticking valve problem.  You can remove the rocker arms and a light rap with a wooden/plastic mallet ought to free them up.  Be careful to hit the valves, not just the retainers.  You may knock a keeper out.  Sompthin made those pushrods bend ;-)  I've had to drive valves out of older/seldom used heads.  Joe R.
