Re: IML: Please Welcome New Member, Kim Schnitzer (1973)

Welcome aboard, Kim!

At the time that the 1972/73's were new, people joked
about it being the car that looked like it was going
backwards, so you seeing a blur between the ends is
something that others have noticed as well.

You said you need a servo?

If this is the unit that is in the engine compartment
atop the fender that looks like a little tower with
hoses going into it, that is the control for the
heater/ac. They were made with a defective resin on
the bottom. The quickie bypass is to loop the heater
hose right back into the engine.

Next best would be to remove the temp contol dial on
the dash with a mechanical heat control lever from a
Chrysler and connect it to a manual water valve from
the same car. They should fit right in, if tough to
get to.

Best Best would be to spend several hundred dollars on
the aluminum version that is made. The Mercedes had
this unit at the time too, and so that is one source
for them as well, but I have gotten 2 that were
claimed good only to have them leak immediately on
install. Fortunately the car is in the Bay Area where
it is temperate, so I don't miss the heat or cooling.

I like the middle solution best (assuming that I'm
correctly addressing the problem and it isn't
something else).

How about taking some photos of your car and sharing
them? We'll be happy to post them and anything that
you'd like to share about the car on the club website
for free, and are happy to update as you progress with
your project.
