There was a time when changing the oil filter wasn't quite so easy (canister style). Saving five or six dollars every other visit to the service bay was also something to consider. As we have seen in some of the recent posts here about inflation, $5.00 meant a whole lot more back then.

Chrysler/Imperial factory service specifications up through the middle '50s allowed for a filter change every other oil change. In the Capacities Section they would often state the number of quarts of crank case oil to refill both with and without a new filter. As recently as the late 1940's, oil filters were considered optional in many cars.
