Joe,
An Ammeter pegged at full charge could be several things. One there is something drawing a large amount of current. Possibly a short. A bad cell in a battery could do the same thing. Or a bad voltage regulator telling the alternator to send a full charge. A bad alternator could also duplicate that condition with a shorted field winding. You said you were running the A/C. how was the blower motor behaving? Was it blowing as usual? Just thoughts for you to ponder & check out.
