IML: '61 Window Motors

When an Imperial of your vintage has an inop power window, I first check the switch. The back of the switch has a pad that is held to the switch usually with the tension of the contact pins in the switch. The metal leads in this pad spread out over time and lose connectivity, and often the pad will dislocate itself partially or fully from the switch. To correct, on the side of the pad that meets the switch, carefully squish together the pressed plastic pins that hold the phenolic plate over the plastic holder so that the plate will lift off, being careful not to lose the positioning of the metal tab leads inside this pad. It will become apparent how to close their gap where the switch pins fit into the leads. Once they have all been 'adjusted', put the plate back on and resquish the plastic pins to hold the plate on. Needle nose pliars are useful for this.


On the window motor, there may be a locknut on an adjusting screw shaft. I've had the experience in a '65 Imperial where I was able to vastly improve the window operation speed by adjusting the lash of this shaft. Your motors differ, I don't know if they have this same lash adjustment, but I'd be surprized if they didn't. Others more up on the earlier window motors may be able to elaborate.

Good morning everyone:

Working on the power windows ('61 Crown) this weekend, I got three out of four of them working relatively well by cleaning, lubricating, clearing tracks of old bead & weatherstipping, etc.

However, I got the rear driver's side goin' (the driver's side window hasn't ever worked) up and down really well but then all of a sudden, it stopped working. Having had the door panel off to do the lubrication work, I noticed the motor got really hot. After a while it cooled off, but still didn't work the windows.

Could I have shorted the motor out with contact cleaner or lubrication? I get nothing from the master switch at the driver's panel nor the window switch on the driver's side rear window. The two windows/motors on the passenger side of the car work just fine.

I haven't done any additional diagnostics because I ran out of time but was wondering if the members of this list have any advice/suggestions before I can get back to it?
