Re: IML: Dummies Books on Engines?

I was a novice a couple of years ago, having spent my entire adult life in a cushy office job and paying someone to do the work for me. I enrolled in a local Vo-Tech school and learned how to build an engine and then went to the body shop class to learn body work. I can now do most of the work on my cars. I also own a ' 59 and I think most of the fun is doing it yourself. There are some very intelligent people on this list. I belong to quite a few lists but this one is by far the best and even though I mostly lurk without any one knowing I exist, I learn something everyday.......So thank you all....I wish you luck...Heading out this morning to Chattanooga......eddie

Hi Laurie,

Well, that is not an easy question you are asking here..
I learned all the stuff I know about cars and engines by reading a lot of
books about those subjects and a lot of practice.
However, I am not thát sure if a 59 Crown is the ideal car to start with :)

On the other, it might well be the right car to start with since it isn't
loaded with electronic gadgets like ABS,ASR, fuel injection etc.
Imperials of that area are not too difficult to understand and to work at.

It is all quite basic stuff (I know that is easy to say for me), meaning
you don't need special equipment or expensive special tools.

If I were you I should start with running to the local library and get me
all the books about car maintainance and engine repair!
After studying those books I would get me a 1959 FSM and a 59 Parts
catalog if possible (for those nice exploded view drawings, gives you a
better idea how everything is put together).

Well, and then it is time to practice...
The only way to become a skilled DIY mechanic is grabbing your tools
together and work on that car.

And ofcourse there is always this wonderful IML if you don't know how to
do a specific job on the car!!

Good luck and congrats with that nice 59 Crown!!
