Re: IML: 60 Imperial reflectors

I visited a guy in PA 2 weeks ago who does 'metallization'..(his term). He had some potmetal and plastic parts he did for a 60 Caddy and a 70isn Nova. I held the pieces next to the polished stainless and the recently rechromed front bumper on my 60 Crown and I would challenge anyone to tell the difference. The problem with the coating versus the plating is the hardness of the finished surface. Obviously the coating isn't as hard as plating so it is susceptable to stone chips, itc. For interior pieces or parts not in the path of an errant stone such as the Flitesweep reflector I think the coating is a very viable alternative. I had a quote from NEL in Philly for a bunch of my parts that need replating. The coating process was about half the cost. The website is attached.

That's cheating. That XJ Jag isn't painted, it's polished aluminum. There are some decent "chrome" type paints, but nothing too good. There is a guy with some kind of plating that chromes fiberglas that looks real good (have the link someplace) but it probably costs more than getting the pot metal replaced.

Did you have a case of beer under your arm when you
walked in the door?

Was the machinist an older man - at or past retirement
age? This is a project for someone with some smarts,
patience, and experience.

Don't let that bad experience get you down. Keep
looking is my advice. I'm personally very leery of
pot-metal repair. You might be ahead buying a
drilling tool, grinding out the pits yourself, and
then learning how to melt brass into the divots and
grind it down.

Thats "all" they do. Pain in the behind, if you ask
me. - Especially for an item that need only pass
casual scrutiny.

One other suggestion: Use a wheel to grind the
surfaces flat/smooth. Perhaps on a Dremel tool or
something.
Fill voids with body filler, and go to an automotive
paint place. They have paints that are "almost"
indistinguishable from chrome. You can use your
sand-blasted piece for this one.

So much of what determines success in life is who you
have helping you. Most places within 100 KM of you
won't be worth talking to. You have to search.

Either way, best of luck in your mission - let us know
how things turn out and how painful the solution was?
