RE: IML: Leaking Steering Box

YBShore,

According to my interchange books, the ’55-’56 shared one steering box assembly, ’57-’58 another, and then ’59-’63 had a third.  So I don’t think the seals from a ’57 will fit a ’56.  Can’t say 100%, but it is a different box.

It also appears that the same box was used on ’55-’56 Imperials, ’55-’56 Chryslers, and ’55-’56 DeSotos.  It also appears that there was a ’55 thru early-’56, and then another one for the rest of 1956.  They might share the same seals, though, who knows what changed…

Good luck in your hunt!  It’s out there SOMEwhere.

Subject: IML: Leaking Steering Box

Imperialists,

I have traced an ongoing leak finally to a seal at my box on my 1956 Imperial Sedan.  I can purchase a Lower Steering Box Seal Kit/Pitman Shaft Seal however the parts house can only confirm this kit to go back to the 1957 Imperial.  My question therefore is, is this  kit compatible for both of those years, or was there a change in technology between the model years preventing me from use of the '57 offering?
