I did rewire a 51 Mercury completely several years ago.  The main thing to remember is to lay out the harness on top of the old one while still installed in the car.  Then one at a time replace each wire.  This took me just 30 days working evenings and on weekends.  I was trying to make it to a tour and had to get new wiring before I went.  All the under hood wires were bare and black with corrosion.  Everything worked perfectly.  Take your time.  The only problem I had was with the extra wires for the optional equipment that was not installed on that car.  My 56 is also in the same boat.  I plan on getting a new harness later this year & spend the winter rewiring.  This car has lots more gadgets than the Merc did.

I would try to rewire a fully functional car as a repair, before I would decide to take the whole thing apart. I have noticed that a large percentage of the cars that are disassembled never get put back together again. Fortunately, all of mine are in good enough condition to enjoy without a complete disassembly. But to be like new, that is what would have to be done. I suppose that I am content with a car that has dirt in places I can't see than one that is stored in a million pieces all over the garage. 

 

I am going to rewire one of my other cars in precisely the way that is being questioned here. I am sure that I will be able to get to all of the wires. If not, I will evaluate the condition of anything that I might have to leave, and do so if it can go without replacement.

 

I am pretty sure that all of the wiring in a '56 Imperial is accessible. A friend of mine rewired his '56 Imperial without disassembling the entire car, but the engine was out for an overhaul at the time he did the work.

I've been watching the discussion on re-wiring with some interest as my '56 is in need of at least some electrical restoration. Has anyone undertaken such a project independently of a full body-off restoration? I'm wondering if it is possible to replace all of the wiring on a complete and functional car or is it really best to do this only when the car is fully disassembled as part of a complete rebuilding?
