RE: IML: 100 Octane Gas in My 1968

I always carry two-or-three cans (2 1/2 gal, 3 gal, and 5 gal)  of either 100 octane leaded premium gas (sold as racing-fuel) or 111 octane in the trunk, available at a couple of places within a few miles of my home-- how much depends on how far I am traveling. The 100 octane sells for $3.49 to $3.99, and the higher octane stuff is currently at $4.99 a gallon. I dump about three-to-four gallons into my 23-gallon tank and fill the rest with 92 or 93 octane unleaded, and the '63 Imp seems to like it alright. I know that there is never a precise mix in the tank, but the idea is to have some lead in there all the time for the sake of the valve seats. In six years and 30,000 miles, I have never ONCE heard a ping from that engine, and it is not detuned in any way. all systems seem to work as advertised, and it always runs smoothly and well, as does my '67 Imp.

I found a local Coastal that sells 100 octane gas for 5.99/gal. Even though it's awfully expensive I decided to give it a shot. This past summer I pretty much alternated between 93 octane and the 100 octane - in other words, when I was down to 1/2 a tank I'd fill up with either the 93 or the 100, depending on what I had filled up with the last time.

I didn't notice any particular improvement in the performance of the car, so I am wondering if there was any benefit to using the 100 octane, or did I just waste my money? When I bought the car four years ago I had the points replaced with electronic ignition. I put very few miles on the car each year. I do get it up to highway speeds fairly frequently when I do use it. I also use a lead substitute every other tankful.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Thanks
