IML: Dirty Fuel Tank

Usually bad gas is accompanied by crumbs and scale. Merely draining the tank isn't going to cure this. I highly recommend removing the tank, cleaning it out properly, and even using a tank coating kit to solve the problem for good. If this isn't done, the crumbs and scale will move through the lines with the new good gas, and plug up the filter. I believe that there is also a filter in the tank that can become clogged. When this happens, the car will die as if it has run out of gas. This can happen repeatedly for a long duration, souring the owner and his family on the old car experience, while properly cleaning out the tank in the first place will take care of it once and for all.

Been there, done that.

Subject: Re: IML: Thank You!

I just wanted to thank those of you who responded to my questions today. The power of this list is impressive and I've learned a lot just from today's posts.

I finally got a hold of my mechanic and he suggested a neat way to drain the old gas. Many of you probably already know this but it was new to me and might be for someone else too. He said to disconnect the line from the pump and use my compressor to force air into the tank with a rag wrapped around it for a tight fit. Apparently it wall drain with only a few pounds of pressure..

Thanks again guys. You were a big help.
