Re: IML: Lead Additive

Burt, thank you for this explanation. It helps to understand what happens inside an engine under high speed and hot, extended conditions. Since I bought this additive I might as well use it.

With high output high speed operation the exhaust valves will wear their way into a soft cylinder head. It's a gradual process but if allowed to progress it will result in increased spring heights and less spring load which permits false valve motion. Also, as the wear progresses the sunken valve seat shrouds the exhaust valve and restricts exhaust gas flow. On dynamometer durability schedules I've seen seats worn 5/16 of an inch. Eventually the valve train "lash" in the hydraulic tappet is gone and the tappet will hold the valve off it's seat.

Remember, this problem is directly related to engine output (combustion chamber temperatures) and engine speed (valve seating velocity) and miles/hours driven. The way our collector cars are driven - I doubt that it is a problem. But - just in case - I add 2 oz of STP Lead Substitute every time I put 5 gallons of gas in my 1968 Dodge Charger.

There were a number of posts recently about lead additives but I don't remember anything about "amounts per gallon". I followed the directions on the product I bought of 1/2 ounce per 5 gallons. Considering a half ounce is such a small amount, does this sound right? Also, can someomne tell me what might happen toa 440 or 413 if it is run with premium unleaded gas and no lead additive? If it is harmful, would it be immediate or gradual over time?

I'd also like to join in with thanks to those of you who fought for our freedom. The character and courage of men and women like you is responsible for the freedoms we all enjoy today.

Thanks You!
