Corroded bulkhead connectors (was Re: IML: Fire causes)

The main electrical connector at the firewall includes the hot wire that runs to the ammeter.
Over the years these blade/slot connectors corrode, increasing resistance and leading to melting wires and engine fires.

Many owners have chosen to bypass the bulkhead connector and run the hot wire directly from the battery to under the dash.

In general, it is a very, very good idea to inspect the connector annually and give it a spritz of electrical contact cleaner.  The same goes for the other critical electrical systems in the ignition and lights circuits.

This problem persisted from the advent of 12-volt alternator systems into the '70s.
