I doubt W.P. had much hand in the names Saratoga, New Yorker, etc. as they
appeared on cars after he retired.   And Newport, Southampton and Bevedere
appeared after he died.

Royal, Windsor, Saratoga, New Yorker, Town & Country, Imperial, Crown,
etc.all give appearances of wealth, and high society, something Chrysler
Sales Division was striving for back in the late thirties.  As with all
names, it is the image that counts.  Southampton has a much nicer ring than
other centres on Long Island - Imperial Crown Locust Valley 2-door hardtop,
for example, just does not give the same image.

The Chrysler Building was built in New York City as at that time it was the
centre of American wealth, business and finance, as well as the largest city
in America.  A building the size of the Chrysler Building would not have
been feasible in any other city in the 1930's.

Maybe, W.P., had an affection for particular New York cities, for his car
lines. Saratoga, NewPort, Windsor, New Yorker, Southhampton, even Belvedere.
As well as the Chrysler building. Just a thought. Dave.

While we're talking about "Southampton" with one "H",
I always assumed the Imperial was named after the rich
and famous locale on Long Island. But there are a
number of other Southamptons. Does anyone know whether
it is the New York town, or some other one? Or was it
just because the name sounded good?
