Re: IML: High output Starter For 60imp 383

Don't forget, there was also a 350 RB  57-58 motor too, I believe the B motor started in 59.361-383, kinda fuzzy,as many of my references are gone thanks to Hurricane Jean. Dave

The 413 is an RB engine while most 383 were B engines. Very early on there was a RB 383.
Other than the greater deck height (height from the crank to the head) the RB engines are also wider where the intake manifold sits and so need a wider intake manifold.
Measuring the width of the intake is probably the easiest way to determine if you have the B or RB engine. I do not know what the exact measurements are, but could find out.

Well, I had the original engine rebuilt, I thought that it was also a 413  but  looking closer I was convinced that it is 383.  The original starter takes up so much space  . And it makes this engine deprived of the horsepower it should easily obtain, for the custom headers I'm going to have made for it. The has an extreme make over and it needs the Hi output smaller starter.

Also, starters for 1962 and up V8 engines will not fit pre-1962 engines.
Before 1962 Chrysler used Autolite direct-drive starters.  Starting in 1962,
Chrysler-built reduction gear starters were used.   The problem lies in the
ring gear - the number of teeth on the gear was changed along with the
starter.

1962-64 Dodge 880 and Chryslers with manual transmissions continued to use
direct-drive stafters as did Canadian-built 1962-66 slant six models
(Prestolite starter).

Hi Jim -
Are you sure about the 383?  As far as I know, unless your Imperial has had
a heart transplant, it should have a 413.
Just curious -
