IML: Are service manuals worth having on the site?

Posting of service information to the club website
involves a considerable amount of effort and
resources, and is done for free for the benefit of
all.

This involves procuring literature, scanning it
page-by-page, adjusting each page's scanned image, and
then posting it, in order, with labels, onto the club
website.

The upside is that the info is then free, can be
accessed from any computer connected to the internet
on the PLANET, and one can print a page for markup
without fear of getting oil on an original copy or can
give it away to a mechanic without concern.

I argue that this is a good deal for all involved, and
I hope that you are aware of what we already have on
the club website.

PROBLEM:
We have hit a wall because we do not have nearly
enough help to hope to complete the work.

We need YOUR help. If you have derived benefit from
the club, and feel like you'd like to help pay us
back, please consider donating time or materials to
this project that will mark a significant achievement
once completed: A collection covering complete
servicing instructions for every Imperial ever made.

Here is what is sorely needed:

1. CONVERSION: This function by volunteers is what
is most needed by the club.

Below is a list of titles. The ones marked SCANNED
exist in electronic format and require conversion to
be posted.

To post them, each page of the volume must be opened
in a graphics program (we have a free one available),
the image needs to be aligned so that it is square on
the screen, the white areas "bleached" to be white,
and any other minor errors corrected.

This is EASY work, and it is repetetive more than
anything else. Learn to do one page, and you're
pretty much good to go on the next 300-400 in the
volume, and each page takes seconds, not minutes.

Once a page is adjusted, it's ready to be uploaded by
one of our volunteers that has the skills to post
these things to the Site. You'll see the list of
completed items is pretty good so far, but the few
people that we have working the site are really in
need of some help - what's been done represents a huge
time investment that is not recognizable unless you
know what it takes to produce the 8500 pages or so
that are already posted.

There is an estimated 6500 pages waiting to be
processed, and another 6500 pages that we don't have
yet. This is more than 3-4 people can do by
themselves if we're to complete it before the decade
is out, so that's why we're asking...

2. CONTENT: We are missing a good number of items.
It's easier to borrow and scan than it is to buy them.

Scanned items have their spines removed so that the
loose leaf pages will go through an auto-feeding
scanner. The book is then re-bound with a spiral
binding and mailed back to the sender, just as useful
as before, and with a gorgeous clear plastic cover as
an added feature. Easy.

If you have time, and wouldn't mind using a laptop
while you're watching TV or some such, the CONVERSION
part is mechanically easy, and is a BIG DEAL - it's
just the most time consuming part, and we really need
help....

Can you afford some time to learn a new trick?

This work will benefit others for decades to come!
