I have successfully retarded the timing on the otherwise properly tuned
413 so that it would run on regular unleaded gas smoothly, and without
any spark knocking. This was done by "road timing" the car rather than
using the timing marks to set. The power is reduced slightly, but I
don't drive them like race cars anymore anyway. The real problem is the
fact that all gas now is unleaded. This eventually causes the valve
seats to wear away and valve recession (into the cylinder head). Some
of this can be avoided by not driving the car at high speed for long
periods. In other words, no long trips on the freeway at 75 mph, like
they were originally designed for and are at their best.
The heads can be rebuilt to handle modern fuel, and when the car
eventually needs a valve job, that is what should be done anyway. I
don't use my Imperials enough anymore to make it worth while, although
when I do have work done I get the hardened valves and valve seats
installed, mostly for the benefit of the next care taker after me.

Subject: IML: gas types
We are in the throws of working on my ’62 Southhampton Crown. In the
‘old’ days when we had 50s-60s high compression engines (’56 Plymouth
Fury) that were supposed to use on high octane fuel, we always used
‘regular’. We did adjust the timing for that.
NOW, my query is; can we still use this method or must we buy
‘premium’? I am not familiar with the changes in the composition of
today’s fuels. Does anyone out there have the facts on this? We do not
use ethanol and are not likely to do so in the future. Would like to
hear from those in the know.
