The shop manual specifies it in order to keep the belts quiet. The manufacturing tolerances were that good. This is because the generator and the power steering pump are connected together, which puts lots of extra load on the belts. That is also why they are dual. If a pulley is worn out, or if the bracket is broken, these need to be repaired/corrected before the system will operate properly.

Irregular pulley ware, or manufacturing tolerances make the extra effort fruitless. Dave.

The best way of getting 2 belts of SOMEWHAT MATCHED is to get a
pair from the same lot number.
