Re: IML: IML DIGEST

Indeed, Dick; you're right.  A friend of mine was rear-ended hard in his 1949 Plymouth Special Deluxe as he was driving from Tucson to Chicago last summer.  He had decided to keep going for a bit after dark, and was hit from behind by a 2002 Malibu.  Fortunately, it was not a substantial car that hit him, and he saw the idiot coming up behind him at a high rate of speed.  He had the presence of mind to floor the accelerator and managed to pick up his speed to about 65 before the impact, but there was still some rear frame damage.

I think this is a worry for all of us with six-volt cars.

Yes, dim tail and brake lights are very dangerous and getting even worse, with all the new cars on the road, they all have superbly visible rear lighting. It is a real nightmare on my 47 Packard, with the tiny little 6 volt lights down by the bumper. I've fitted 50 watt microscope bulbs (my lenses are heavy glass), but it is little help. I get really paranoid
driving at night in traffic. During the day, I use the old hand signals,
which we were forced to learn back when I started to drive, in the early
50s. I think most modern drivers don't know what I am doing when I stick my arm out the window.
