[FWDLK] Check valve

Hi:

Thanks to all who replied to my inquiry about power steering fluid.  ATF type A it is!!

I'm sure some of you can now help me with this one:  In the bottom of the block in a hole there is a check valve about 3/8 inch in diameter and about an inch long and has a floating ball in it with a rubber ring around the shaft.

I'm guessing it is supposed to keep the oil from draining down from the oil filter when engine is off.

My question is:  Is there supposed to be a spring in this check valve or does the ball just free float?

Thanks,

Dave Olson
