Have you undone the speedometer cable? It has very little extra length in
it so that could be holding it back.
Chrysler did not adopt the circuit board for its dashboards until about
1962, so each gauge and light will have a wire (or more) leading to it.
This mess of wiring may be held in place around the cluster opening by clips
which you may need to open and let the wires hang free. If you can, look
up from the floor, or feel around with your fingers, to see if there are any
clips anywhere.
I do not believe the 1958 DeSoto had an oil gauge, just an idiot light. If
it had a gauge, there might be a small metal tube running to the gauge which
would have to be undone.
(Never had a 1958 DeSoto, but I went through this on two 1964 Studebakers.
1963-1966 Studebakers an oil gauge and no circuit board for the dash - just
a bunch of wires hanging around.)

Need some help: have to remove instrument cluster on
a '58 DeSoto since there are some problems with the
wiring behind it and possibly ignition. The
instruments come out about 3 inches then,
no go. Can anyone advise how to remove the instrument
cluster? Or is there another way to get to the
wiring? The service manual is no help.
