Re: [FWDLK] Cuttin' down on the noise

The Dynamat is good stuff and easy to use, but heavy and very expensive so you don't (at least I don't) want to use too much of it all over the place. The most important places I have found are on the firewall, over the tranny hump, and the rear wheelwells if possible. A small section of it in the center of each floor board and door seems to work well. You can then fill in around the floor with cheaper, lighter stuff.

It is too bad that you can't just put some of that stuff over the vent windows as well. :)
Usually most of the noise in my old cars comes as a result of bad vent window moldings and a high compression motor with headers. I finally replaced the vent window moldings in my 63 nova wagon that I drive regularly and was amazed that it sounded like a new car again. After I put in an overdrive transmission to DRAMATICALLY reduce the whine of the motor at 70 mph, I could actually talk to my wife and kids without yelling. The car is now a real pleasure to drive and gets much better gas mileage as a bonus. The only drawback to the 200-4r overdrive tranny that I used is that it put out a lot more heat and forced me to upgrade my already new radiator.

Has anyone tried a Gear Vendors overdrive on a forward look car? I have thought of trying one, but am afraid of shelling out all that dough if I don't end up liking it.

I am curious, what have you guys done to cut down on noise in our cars? Have
you installed Dynamat or anything like that? How about undercoating? How
much, what type? How about under the carpet, anything special? I am doing a
total restoration and thought now is a good time to cut down on some road
noise. I know that Dynamat can be installed in the doors and on the
underside of the roof....anywhere actually. I am just wondering if any you
have done this and what were the results. Thanks.
