Tom,
Try taking your shop manual to your service shop and have them read the
instructions. They are telling you to take your car to the tranny shop
because they have no clue about what to do. On second thought, take it to
the tranny shop anyway.
To remove the old cable, you can disconnect the internal cable end retaining
clip with a screwdriver by inserting it through a hole filled with either a
plug or the neutral safety switch. Just be careful to only loosen the clip
enough to release the cable and not dislodge the clip.
To insert the cable, just plug it in and adjust.

They should have to do no more than pull the pan. Here's a helpful hint

I just wanted to check with you guys, I brought my car down to the shop to
have a shifter cable installed and they informed me to bring it back to the
tranny shop since the tranny has to be disassembled? Is this the only way to
get a replacement shifter cable installed on a 58 Plymouth - 6 cyl automatic
setup.?
