                The grounding wire method as Roger said is great for testing
the gauge. You want to do this with a helper as it "pegs" the needle and you
don't want to do that for long. To check the sending unit, drop the tank and
remove the sending unit. Hook an ohmmeter to the unit by placing one wire on
the body of the sending unit and the other to the sending unit wire. Move
the sending unit float through its range of motion and make sure you get a
reading that changes throughout the range of motion. I wish I could remember
the resistance range but it has been quite some time. Anyhow, if there is a
spot where you have the same reading (i.e.1/2 to full), remove the cover off
of the sending unit by bending the four tabs back on the little "box". Now
the sending units resistance section will be exposed. Check for foreign
objects holding the float assembly up, and look for carbon build up, or
darkness is certain areas. Remove the carbon with alcohol and a stiff paint
brush. Let the alcohol dry and check the unit again. Also, check to see if
the moving contact makes contact with the stationary resistance bar
throughout the range of motion. The moving contact should not be tight
against the bar. It should move smoothly along the stationary resistance
bar. If  it has a full range of resistance at that point, put it all back
together and enjoy. If not, you may have to find another sending unit. Hope
