On some of our cars, it is not necessary to "drop the tank" to remove the
sender. My 56 has an access hole in the trunk floor right over the sender.

If you get to the "Drop tank and remove sender" part, first check the
float to see if it's partially filled with gas. Over time, some will
develop a leak and start filling up with gas, throwing the readings
off. You'll know if there's gas in it.
