My 56 Olds came from LA. It was made in LA. I bought it in 1979. At that
time, upon sale of a vehicle, it was required to retrofit a PCV system. My
Olds came with a fitting that replaced the draft tube, with a hose through a
PCV valve to a plate added under the carb with a port into the intake.
Another hose connected the oil filler tube with the air cleaner. Fresh
filtered air is drawn from the air cleaner through the oil filler tube into
the crankcase. Blowby gases are drawn out the draft tube fitting, into the
intake, and burned.
Not only does a PCV system reduce pollution, but also it is very good for
the engine. It is not called POSITIVE crankcase ventilation for nothing. It
draws out fumes, gasoline, and gases that get into the oil and thin it out.
One of the major components of burnt fuel is water. This also is in the
blowby and can cause rust, sludge, and mobilize acids. Sludge and oil
thinning are greatly reduced by a PCV system.

I'm gonna 'hit' my 3 message/day rate, but, W.T.H. -----around early
70's, CA 'experimented'
with retro-fitting positive crankcase ventilation, on 'all'(?) cars;
"you" will see (I do), periodically, late 50's cars, with
hose-connections running from a valve cover, to the air cleaner, which
is NOT a bad-idea, because, otherwize, the nasty-oily blow-by, is
shunted to the undercarriage area, by that steel tube, that connects to
the rear of the engine, @ the 'valley'.
At some point,. shortly thereafter, the law was changed-back, and, now,
"we" are free to pollute the air, & mess-up our undercarriages.
My car came from IN, so it's got the OEM engine-vent-tube "oiling" the
undercarriage.
